Yesterday morning I came across an index card where I had written portions of this Psalm, apparently to condense it down to a type of instruction to myself. I have had the habit for years of writing scripture on index cards to carry with me during the day especially in times of trials in my life. I have found that scripture reading is a very important part of training myself to not give way to my thundering thoughts.
When I came across this card I put it on my laptop to further review and maybe write about it. And write I will - but I did not know at the time yesterday that I would get a life lesson in applying it as I did later in the day. So here goes - I appreciate the Holy Spirit giving me a heads up...
Verse 1 - Fret not yourself because of evildoers. Fretting can either be a verb or a noun. If it's a verb it's a doing of it; a noun it's a state of being. I don't want to do or be either in reaction to evildoers.
Verse 2 - Those evildoers will soon fade away.
Verse 3 - Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. To befriend faithfulness? What a beautiful way of saying to get close to becoming a faithful person.
Verse 4 - Delight yourself in the LORD - the second part of this verse tells us that then He will give us the desires of our heart.
Verse 5 - Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will act. (Cause and effect. Yea!)
Verse 6 - He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
Verse 7 - Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices.
Verse 8 - Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
...and this Psalm continues for 32 more verses that all direct and state the difference between choosing God's ways/verbs when living your life, or not. When life hands you a betrayal, or an absence of consideration, what is the response? What will be the choice of doing? I pray I will do as written, refraining from anger, forsaking wrath/vengeance, fretting not, turning from evil, choosing to do good, and waiting, waiting, waiting - on the LORD. He is faithful.
