Ah, the thunder of many peoples;
they thunder like the thundering of the sea!
Ah, the roar of nations;
they roar like the roaring of mighty waters!
Isaiah 17:12

I am currently reading through Isaiah. As happens frequently while reading scripture, I was stopped in my tracks by a small section of scripture and this time it was with the proceeding two verses. In the context of Chapter 17, these verses refer to the expanding truth of the folly upon the whole earth of forgetting God.
Being a poet, of sorts, and a person who loves the imagery created from combining words is a particular fashion, I really appreciate the poetry of verse 12. Yet what is written there is far more powerful than the ability to make you feel the words in poetic fashion, as I do, but the words are a warning to the people of the earth as they clatter about. In all the combined power of humanity in its never ceasing activity, combined together it is only a noise to God.
In my own life I hear such a noise around me and in my thoughts. Yet in the volume of distraction, I long for that still small voice that speaks to me in a whisper. (1 Kings 19:9-18). Perhaps it's a still small voice because it takes effort to turn down the volume all around me, and listen.
